In Wing Chun the chinese pole originated with many different metal attachments for cutting, slicing, hooking, jabbing and so on. As it did everywhere.
Opponents from around the world could attack in those many ways.
We restrict our techniques and applications
(science, engineering, logic, art), and movements for jabbing, and some control, and deflection.

After all, were not carrying around 9 foot poles and swords.
I recommend a 6 foot rattan pole for standard training, and then advanced training the 8 foot.
Any pole will do, But proper and complete training must include a pole that you can whip with flexibility.
